Tejon & Andalucia
Posted By teacher
Part of my fascination with languages is this thought about where words come from. Words have entered the Spanish language from all sorts of places, and I think this is wonderful.
Here is a word that has made it all the way from the Celtic languages of Britain:
‘Tejon’ means ‘badger’, and it comes from the Old Irish ‘tadg’, and the Scottish ‘taghan’.
Did you know that the name for the southern province comes from the Arabic name for the whole part of the peninsula that they conquered between 711 and 1492, Al-Andalus?
